February in the Highland Lakes is picking up speed. This week’s highlights include the opening of the Hill Country Community Theatre’s latest production, the annual Rainbow Trout Release in Llano, and a rare mushroom hunt in Inks Lake State Park

  • Comedy: Davey Wester| Marble Falls: Brass Hall | 7 p.m. The new comedy series continues with nationwide headliner Davey Wester. Known for his "Blue Collar" style and roots at the Comedy Store, Wester brings a night of sharp wit to downtown Marble Falls.

  • Rainbow Trout Release Party | Llano: Grenwelge Park | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. A signature Highland Lakes winter event. Texas Parks & Wildlife Department will release 2,000 rainbow trout into the Llano River. The event features fly-fishing demonstrations, free hot dogs, and experts from Texas Parks and Wildlife.

  • Texas Star Mushroom Walk | Burnet: Inks Lake State Park | 1 p.m. Join a guided search for the Chorioactis geaster, the Texas Star, one of the rarest mushrooms in the world, found only in Texas and parts of Asia. This 1.5 - 2-mile hike is an educational deep dive into local fungi. Registration is required as spots are limited.

Wednesday, Feb. 4

  • Texas Hold 'Em | Llano: Joe’s Bar | 6 – 10 p.m. Free play with no buy-in. Prizes awarded for 1st ($15) and 2nd ($10). Space is limited to the first 22 players to arrive.
  • Texas Hold 'Em | Burnet: Trailblazer Grille | 6 p.m. A welcoming, free-to-play environment perfect for beginners looking to learn the game.

Thursday, Feb. 5

  • Billiards & Darts Tournaments | Buchanan Dam: Pardners Nightclub | 7 p.m. Practice begins at 7 p.m. for pool and 7:45 p.m. for darts, followed by the competitive weekly bracket.
  • Poker Tournament | Buchanan Dam: Pardners Nightclub | 7 p.m. A $40 entry tournament. This is a more competitive staple for serious local players.

Saturday, Feb. 7

  • Cowboy Coffee | Burnet: Inks Lake State Park | 8:30 a.m. Start your morning by the fire under the oak trees near the group picnic area. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee brewed the old-fashioned "sock" way by park volunteers. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own reusable mug and a camp chair.
  • Guided Summit Hike | Fredericksburg: Enchanted Rock SNA | 10 a.m. A ranger or volunteer-led trek up the 0.8-mile Summit Trail. Learn about the unique geology and biology of the batholith while taking in panoramic views of the Llano Uplift. Meet at the Gazebo at the Summit Trailhead.
  • Fishing with a Ranger | Burnet: Inks Lake State Park | 10 a.m. Meet at the North Fishing Pier to learn the basics of casting and knot-tying. No fishing license is required for this program, and all gear and bait are provided. Perfect for families and beginners.

Sunday, Feb. 8

  • Hike Like a Geologist | Fredericksburg: Enchanted Rock SNA | 9:30 a.m. Discover the volcanic secrets of the Hill Country on this moderate 1-mile exploration. A geologist will guide you through the lower parts of the rock to show you the landscape through a scientific lens. Note: Registration via email to the park is recommended.
